MCIA general manager and CEO Steve Dicdican said that sustainable tourism has been included in the airport’s 50-year master plan that envisions a sustainable and passenger-friendlier airport.
Dicdican said by increasing the throughput of people going in and out of the Philippines, that will also increase our economy and our tourism, will have a multiplier effect on the community.
In terms of sustainability he added that the MCIA is currently utilizing its seven upgraded sewage treatment plants.
“We are also considering proposals for reusing treated wastewater in addition to the plans to use rain water catchments to efficiently satisfy the water requirements of the airport without using too much ground water,” Dicdican said.
The airport is also looking into more energy-efficient utilities that will add to the solar panels already in use. As part of the MCIA’s 50-year master plan, these developments are expected to ensure more sustainable water and electrical utility systems in the future, he added.
According to Dicdican the just concluded Routes Asia itself, a major gathering of route development and aviation industries, practiced sustainability through the use of recycled paper throughout the event and LED bulbs instead of shell scheme lights.
With the recent changes in travel trends and the environment, such practices are deemed imperative in ensuring a sustainable growth in the tourism industry and instilling the practice of responsible tourism among visitors, tourism establishments, airlines and airports alike, Dicdican said.
He added that the master plan aims at growing the airport capacity to receive 50 million passengers per annum, five times its current arrivals to date.

Let's hear it for the Toyota Camry. This is a 2018 Toyota Camry LE. This vehicle was an innocent victim on I-10 in Phoenix during morning rush hour. Ramon Suarez, one of our Toyota of Surprise Team Members, was heading to Sky Harbor Airport to pick up a customer flying in from California. In route, Ramon was slammed in the back by a semi-trailer, which pushed him into another big truck in front of him. The picture demonstrates the force with which the Camry was hit. Here's the great news: Ramon walked out of the vehicle because the Toyota did everything it was supposed to do. The entire passenger cabin is intact, and all four doors still work properly. So impressive! If you ever wonder which are the safe vehicles out there, here's an easy answer. Thanks for taking a look.
